Everyone I know is getting ready for Sunday's game featuring our beloved Green Bay Packers against the New York Giants. Some began celebrating Friday already. Bars are packed, everyone is having parties, and everywhere you go, someone greets you with a "Go Pack Go" cheer.
It's a big deal! Wisconsinites love their Packers. It's almost a religion in and of itself. Quite a few churches around Wisconsin have moved their Sunday evening services to the afternoon so everyone can be home in time for the game which starts around 5:30 pm. Most of the business offices around here allowed for a "casual" day on Friday so their employees could dress in their Packer gear and show their support.
The stores are loaded with Packer gear for sale! It's the first thing you see when you walk in the doors. Packer jerseys, cheeseheads, and green and gold cupcakes to name a few.
A friend of my husband's from work, shuts himself in his heated garage away from the rest of the family to watch the Packer games. Out there, he's allowed to smoke, drink, and cuss at the TV. My husband said he broke a chair last weekend during the game when he got excited. I had thought about inviting him over to watch the game with us, but we can't afford to replace broken furniture, so he can stay in his garage!
A local radio station started a petition to have a dead-end road named New York Avenue, renamed temporarily for the upcoming game. It's been changed to "McCarthy Way" (the head coach's name) for Sunday's game. The radio station even paid to have a street sign made! A spokesperson for the Packers said, "It's ironic that New York Avenue and the New York Giants both dead end in Green Bay."
