While waiting for the bus with the children this morning, Timothy and Rebecca knocked down some huge icicles hanging from the rain gutters.
Rebecca: "Look how big this one is, Mom!"
Timothy: "Mine's bigger, Mom!" because everything is a competition with these two.
Me: "Yep. They're both pretty big."
Rebecca: "Look, Tim. Your tongue sticks to it when you lick it," as she lightly touches her tongue to the icicle.
Before I could say, "No! Don't lick the icicles!" Timothy sticks out his tongue, touches the icicle to it and holds it there for about five seconds. Then he tries to pull it off. It was like I was watching it all in slow motion, yet it happened so fast. I wanted to tell him not to pull it, that we'd get it off with some warm water in the house, but I couldn't.
He pulled hard and his tongue let loose with a sick little "snap". The whole thing reminded me of the scene from the movie "Dumb and Dumber" when Harry gets his tongue stuck to a pole. It was hilarious in the movie.
There he stands, holding this huge icicle, his tongue hanging out of his mouth bleeding a little bit, with an I-can't-believe-that-just-happened look on his face.
When I found my voice I asked, "Why did you do that?"
Timothy: "I just wanted to see if Becky was telling the truth."
Aaahhh.....so many things to learn when you're eight.
Now, while this is going on, the other two children are laughing. Loudly. It took every ounce of self control I had not to join in and laugh with them.
Bad Mom! I know.....
Before throwing the icicle and shattering it to pieces, Timothy looks at it and says, "There's a piece of my tongue on it!" This sends the other two into fits of laughter that has them doubled over.
Thanks goodness the bus decided to arrive at that moment because I could feel an argument coming on, or worse yet, a crying eight year old with hurt feelings. They all ran down the driveway and got on the bus.
I'm giggling to myself as I write this because you know, I'm a bad momma. The replay in my head is just too funny, and he's not here to see me laugh. I do feel bad, though. I know his tongue is going to be sore, probably for a couple of days.
I guess what they say is true. Live and learn.

I laughed and laughed as I read this post. I too had the scene from Dumb and Dumber playing in my head.
Kids do the craziest things, and they're SO curious lol.
Thanks for sharing this story, it really made my day.
