Staying Young

I'm not old,thirty-six in fact, but I feel like I'm pushing a hundred after my outing this morning with Tristan. The high school had a family fun fitness day, complete with indoor and outdoor activities.

First on our list of activities was the fitness center. A mile on the treadmill while Tristan lifted weights, and a mile together on the game bikes navigating the trails in downhill biking. Then, it was off to the gym for some basketball, disc golf, and a beanbag toss game, all of which I participated in but did not do well. Throwing something into something else when you have no depth perception does not make for much competition, but it was a fun time.

The real kicker came when Tristan signed us up for cross-country skiing. I've never done it before, and the jury is still out as to whether I'll ever do it again. Thank goodness it was a beautiful day today because I ended up falling down seven times, and I was covered in snow from the waist down.

We spent an hour trekking through the woods around the school. Although I'm sure it was beautiful scenery, I didn't see any of it because I had to use all my concentration just to stay standing. By the time we got back to the school, I was beat. I was never so happy.

Now, as I sit here writing this, my feet hurt, I have a bruise on my knee from one of my many falls, and I'm tired. But, it's a good tired. A tired that tells me I've done something today to better myself and my health. If you don't get in shape, or at least lose a pound or two cross-country skiing, you never will!

Kids have a way of keeping us young, and Tristan is always pushing me to stay active. I'm thankful for that. It is because of him I've lost forty pounds already, and now that spring is approaching, he's gearing up to get me going again. Gotta love that kid!
